Located at 7001 Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, footsteps from the infamous Hollywood & Highland Shopping Center, sits the ultra-exclusive Magic Castle. Before you get too excited, you should know there are only two ways to gain entry into The Magic Castle:
You can become a member for lots (and I mean lots) of money
-or-
You can be invited by a member/magician who is perfoming at the Castle
A few months ago I was invited by a friend to attend a night at The Magic Castle. I didn’t even think twice before accepting the offer. Chances like this don’t come around too often.
The very first thing I noticed about The Magic Castle is that the exterior looks very similiar to The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Since The Magic Castle was built in 1908, and The Mansion wasn’t built until around 54 years later, I am more than convinced that Walt Disney was inspired by the Castle’s beautiful exterior.
As you enter The Magic Castle, you find yourself in a room full of books. You are soon informed that to enter the main hall, you must walk up to the owl statue on one of the book shelves and say the magic words (of which I can’t tell you for super secret reasons).
Once inside, there are many things for one to do. There is more than one bar inside of The Castle and a full-scale restaurant too. And what would a Magic Castle be without a magic show, right? Upon entering, you are given a brochure with showtimes for all the magicians performing that night (The Castle contains around 5 small showrooms, so you are able to get very up close and personal with the performers).
We watched many magician that night, but for me, the highlight was being called out of the audience to help with a specific act. The magician wanted me to put him in a straightjacket while he held on to two eggs. After checking the jacket for secret compartments, I confirmed that the jacket was legit and strapped him in.
Of course, the magician found his way out of the straightjacket … but the real surprise was when he pulled out two live chickens from the sleeves, instead of the two eggs! To this day, I am still wondering how he could have possibly done this trick.
If your ever have the (rare) opportunity to attend an evening at The Magic Castle, go, go, GO!
