Located at 1933 Jefferson Drive, on a residential street in Pasadena, California, is The Bunny Museum. Before you read any further, it’s important to note that this ‘museum’ is actually the home of owners Candace Frazee and Steve Lubanski.
After a failed attempt to visit the museum in March (you need to make reservations months in advances), we made sure to accept the museum’s open house offer on Memorial Day.
Before entering the house, you are greeted by a giant Chia-Pet on the lawn, in the shape of a bunny. There are many plaques on the wall outside the entrance, including a strict list of rules. No hats, purses, bags and so forth. This is to ensure that nobody steals any of the bunny memorabilia, or knocks anything over.
We were given a guided tour by Frazee, who explained that the museum holds over 24,000 bunny items. One look inside the house, and you’ll definately believe it. From the ceiling, all the way to the ground, you are surrounded by all things bunny. This included stuffed animals, salt shakers, clocks, action figures … and wait for it … the frozen bodies of four deceased bunnies that belonged to Frazee and Lubanski.
I was surprised that with all this bunny merchandise, the couple only owns three living bunny rabbits. I brought them carrots from Trader Joe’s, but the bunnies seemed timid and spend the majority of the ten minutes I spent with them, hiding behind a desk.
Frazee mentioned that they would be moving shortly (the location has not been announced at this time), in order to make room for more bunny memorabilia … and to think this all started many, many years ago, with one bunny-oriented gift, given to Frazee from Lubanski. They now give each other a bunny-oriented gift, every single day!
Visit http://www.thebunnymuseum.com if you are interested in visiting The Bunny Museum. It’s like nothing you’ve even seen before. Just keep in mind that you will be put on a long waiting list.
